Farmhouse with Extension – Wolzak House

Bjarne Mastenbroek, the founder of Amsterdam-based

SeARCH architecture firm, is responsible for redesigning

of old farmyard with various outbuildings to become a

single-family house. The livestock barn which formed

the stem of the traditional T-form farmhouse is demolished

and replaced by a new building. This new extension contains

the entrance, kitchen, workspace and garden shed while existing

barn contains guest bedrooms. Large conservatory separates

both spaces. The freestanding barn is retained with an option

for a future swimming pool conversion.

The load bearing construction of the extension consists

of a series of solid prefabricated wooden plates. They define

the building’s internal finishes and influence the quality

of the interior space. Even though SeARCH is known for

designing modern environments this house was designed

on emerging interest in farm architecture.
